All Hallow’s Eve is the first Cristyn West novel I’ve read, but if they’re all this good it definitely won’t be my last. West writes in an accessible style that draws you easily into the story. Before you know it you’re several chapters into it and can’t put it down because you just have to know what comes next.
West’s ability to tell a story, and to make you care about the characters is simply phenomenal. The canvas is peppered with potential suspects, some more likely than others and you really aren’t able to figure out who is doing the deadly deeds until the final moments and then it’s a race against time as there are so many players you genuinely care about involved in the storyline.
I loved West’s flawed and believable characters. For me if the characters don’t ring true the entire story falls short, but West delivers every time with character’s so real you expect them to jump off the page and start stalking you. Seriously though, the killer isn’t the only well-developed character, there are so many you find yourself routing for, or against as the case may be.
I quickly and easily lost myself in the pages of All Hallow’s Eve. It’s spellbinding and addictive, I literally could not put it down. After the first few chapters I had to know what was going on, who was doing it and most importantly, why? I don’t know what was scarier though, the fact that West writes such a good serial killer, or the fact she was able in this instance to get into the mind of killer in a way that ultimately is bone-chilling.
Definitely a great read. Don’t save it for a scary, stormy night when you’re on your own – you’ll definitely want contact with real human beings during the times you drag yourself away from the pages. I wouldn’t want to be alone in the house with things that go bump in the night while I was reading this book, of course, even knowing you’re not alone will only offer a measure of comfort while you’re lost in the tale of All Hallow’s Eve.
