Dr. Surprise gives a scientific explanation for the phenomenon of synchronicity, defined as meaningful coincidence of two or more events that are causally unrelated. An author with a strong spiritual belief might say that the synchronicities you observe are signs from the universe or your angels that validate your intuitive feeling. Dr. Surprise, however, says that the synchronicities you observe are merely a mirror of your own unconscious mind, created from what you think and feel strongly about. Since this book is written by a Ph.D. in psychology, expect science talk about the brain and also quantum physics. In addition, there’s information on the three ways people have traditionally used to induce altered states of consciousness, and also how he explains various psychic abilities. In the last chapter, Surprise gives you seven “games” you can play to create your own synchronicities.
To me, this book sounds like another way to say that the law of attraction really works, that synchronistic events are the physical manifestations of what you’ve been focusing your attention on. One of the most compelling questions this book raises for me is this: if all the world’s a stage, and we are merely players, then who are the production crew members backstage? Who are the ones co-creating our synchronicities with us? There are still unanswered questions about the phenomenon of synchronicity. Dr. Surprise’s work is not done, and I look forward to reading more of what he uncovers, which hopefully will help us understand our reality better. He ends the book with “believe more in yourself and your own abilities than in anything I have to say.” Ok, I like that, but part of reading books is also enjoying what other people have to say. Then test out what they say by having your own experience. This is a good book not for those who believe on faith, but rather for those who want to apply their left-brain toward right-brained phenomena.
